Welcome! This space is dedicated to small words on language, culture, media, and memes! Small Words Blog investigates the hidden meanings in the language we encounter every day, online and IRL. We can discover a lot about how the world is just by looking at how people communicate. Whether it’s about politics and world events or just who broke the fax machine, Small Words is here to overthink it and understate it.

Besides, people can’t always say what they mean, and there is no shortage of cultural, ideological, and personal differences between us. This is a place to explore those differences, scrutinize misunderstandings, expose misinformation, and at the same time find commonalities. Luckily, we don’t need much in common to come to an understanding.

Just a little humility, a little humor, and a little analysis no one asked for. Enjoy, and I hope you can take a moment to join the discussion!

Hi, I’m Mia!

I’m the author of Small Words. I hold a Master’s of Library and Information Science, and a BA in Linguistics.

When I was first studying linguistics, I was amazed to find out that language touches every aspect of our lives. It is everywhere people are. What’s more, all knowledge depends on language, passing on the wisdom of people who came before. Where would we be without the data and information that scientists, scholars, and academics worked so hard to unearth? I can think of no better way to study the wonders of the world than through words!
