Everything Everywhere All at Once

Have you seen Everything Everywhere All at Once? What did you think of it?

I loved it. There were gross outs, but the message was really touching. Can’t say I usually cry watching Kung Fu movies but well- here we are

The movie is set in a world mirrored by a bunch of parallel worlds. In each world, a key event is changed in the heroine’s story- with wacky results.

I like the way the movie sidesteps some important issues:

Obviously, there can be strong female leads with agency, and women can be many things at once (you could even say MULTI- dimensional! haha). Women can date women, and men can be sentimental. These things are taken as a given and aren’t called out.

All that aside, probably the most important theme is the rift between the heroine and her daughter. Mom’s main mission is to save the metaverse from her daughter’s (self) destructive power. Classic new-adult angst stuff.

They bounce around universes collecting skills and generally being rowdy.

We find out they are a fair match, and both are kinda all-powerful. In the end, the daughter is saved from her own destructive nihilism, and the mother finds that missed opportunities add to her life. she comes to love her corner of the universe without regrets, and there’s personal growth for everyone.

Kindness and acceptance win the day.

In the most powerful scene (imo), the mother and daughter are rocks in a world that hasn’t developed life. They look out into the panoramic view of a vast canyon:

The daughter says, “every new discovery is just a reminder”

And the mother completes the sentence, “we’re all small and stupid”

They have a good laugh, and you have the feeling that they get each other for the first time in a while

Very heartwarming. Good show. Five Stars!
